Renovating on the Costa del Sol

On the Costa del Sol, renovations often move at a local pace: everything gets done, but rarely at lightning speed. Heat, holiday seasons and contractor backlogs affect availability. Here’s how to get small and large projects over the finish line—and how an interior designer can run the project on a turnkey basis.

When you bring an interior designer in early, you get a single point of contact responsible for design, scheduling, procurement and quality assurance. This is especially helpful for remote owners and investors.

Space planning, materials, colours, scheduling and site supervision—from light cosmetic updates to more extensive refurbishments. Multiple contractors can be coordinated as needed (electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry). The designer can keep all the threads in hand and report progress to the owner.

Loose furniture, built-ins, lighting and textiles (orders, deliveries and carry-in). In Spain, the order-to-delivery process isn’t always the most straightforward. That’s why support from an interior designer at this stage is often worth its weight in gold.

Deliveries can be time consuming.

The finished result: furnished, styled and cleaned. An investor gets a photo-ready package to market quickly, and for an owner-occupier it’s wonderful to arrive to a home where everything is ready. Sound good? Get in touch!

Plan ahead

Working backwards from the end date works best: lock in the target date (move-in/rental/listing), break the job into stages and secure delivery windows for materials and furniture. Remember that August and December slow almost everything down. The toughest months to request completion are September or January; it depends on the situation of course, but in general achieving “finished” in those months can be very difficult. August and December make operations choppy even when you’ve planned for it.

Whether your goal is to get the property rented quickly or to deliver a turnkey interior for an investment home before the autumn season, start planning and scheduling early. When mapping the timeline, keep a cool head and always allow time for “surprises”. They occur almost without exception. Even when everyone does their best to hit the dates, you’ll spare yourself stress by anticipating delays.

Always nice to enter a ready space.

A successful renovation on the Costa del Sol = planning + booking + supervision.

When you start in good time and lock in the right crew, you’ll stay on schedule even if the local tempo is unhurried. An interior designer helps keep everything on track and delivers your home or investment property turnkey.
